Who Made My Clothes?
Leah worked as a manager of the Mandatory store years ago and returned to work part time in the shop as an inventory and accounts wizz. Leah coordinates buying meetings, manages stock levels and is responsible for merchandising as well as assisting with shoots. She also manages our corporate accounts and keeps the back end of the business running smoothly.

Fashion Revolution is a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. All this week we’re profiling the small team behind Mandatory with the aim to answer the campaign question: #whomademyclothes

Personal Wardrobe Planning

Mandatory is pleased to offer a personal wardrobe planning consultation service.

For many of our clients a comprehensive plan where pieces work together to create a functional wardrobe is the most efficient and effective approach to allocating money for clothing over a season of work, functions and fun. Our service identifies existing pieces that work, recognises garments that have potential but may need minor adjustments to the fit and pinpoints key gaps in the wardrobe. We make suggestions that bring pieces together. We also offer advice on accessories, shoes and function wear as well as how to best care for your wardrobe.

Consultations begin in store where there are examples of likely types of garments to identify your taste and wardrobe needs: Style/textures/colours/levels of formality/lifestyle requirements.

We then schedule a time to visit with you at your house. In-home wardrobe consultations are relaxed and efficient and take between 1-2 hours.

The main focus is to put outfits together within your wardrobe for different events and scenarios.  We do this by identifying what’s working well, recognising any ‘gaps’ and by making suggestions for pieces that would bring the wardrobe together. We bring samples, swatches, pictures and record ideas for things you express interest in, which can later be fitted and made for you back at the store. We also organise alterations for existing pieces where needed.

The cost of this consultation is $200 with no strings attached – you are not obliged to purchase anything after the consultation. If, however you find suggestions useful and it results in us making things for you, the $200 is offset against purchases at a rate of $50 per item.

You will be provided with a ‘Style File’ summarising your consultation, advice and our suggestions on future purchases and things to look for. As the season progresses its not uncommon for us to contact clients with relevant suggestions as they arrive in stock

Testimonial:

Clare and Hannah delivered great advice on my wardrobe. I approached Clare with the suggestion that I needed help! I had learnt to trust Clare and Hannah when buying clothes at Mandatory over the last many years. Their advice was clear and tailored (no pun intended) to what I wanted my business wardrobe to do for me. I confessed to making some bad choices in the past. Expensive clothes that I only wore once!  I got it right a few times too, but without thinking about how it would work with the whole wardrobe. I have every faith that with their advice that won’t happen again. Also they made it easy to think about how various items go together. With their help I know that I can get more out of the investment I’m making in clothes. Also it wasn’t a sales exercise to get me to buy Mandatory. They give great advice on other brands as well. Highly recommended. – Bernie White

Mandatory is Excited to be a part of the 2015 Chinese New Year Festival in Wellington on the 14th - 22nd of February with the New Clothes for the New Year fashion show.

Wearing new clothes is one of the Chinese New Year traditions, it symbolises a fresh start and a new beginning to the year. Mandatory will be showing a mix of casual and formal looks to inspire wardrobe schemes for the New Year.

Entry is free and this event is held on Saturday the 14th Feb at the TSB arena. For more info get all the details at chinesenewyear.co.nz

Marcus Shirts have somewhat of a cult following at Mandatory. Supplied by an Italian family company, we order these shirts about 6 month in advance. At some untold time these shirts appear in a giant box at the shop, and we unpack  them all with bated breath. These shirts are not inexpensive, they are exceptional. The fit is european - slim and tall with a variety of collar shapes including cut-away, classic and button-down. Because we only order a limited range of these shirts, we keep a list of guys and their shirt sizes in store for the Marcus aficionados; they are the first to know about the arrival of these shirts and guaranteed to not miss out. To be added to this list please get in touch or call in to see them for yourself.

Summer is almost here

There is no doubt that the upheaval caused by the closing of our tailored wear manufacturer mid year is having a dramatic and ultimately quite positive effect on our products and collection.  We have moved to further specialise our Made to Measure suit programme, and we have developed a far stronger collection for smart casual / boardroom-to-bar at the right time.

(We developed stock of a couple of best shapes for this season and into next through Cambridge prior to their closing.  We will be kick starting a new relationship for tailored pants production with a reputable South Island company in the New Year.)

We have met the challenge  to produce more refined pieces for formal/creative, work/occasion wear through our workroom in Wellington. We are very proud of what we have achieved in the past six months since receiving the big news.

The many new fits, fabrics and garments are being very well reiceived as we meet the growing smart casual market where casual needs to be smarter, and the smart dressed industries are relaxing a bit.

Our summer ranges always contain elements of Resort Wear and this season’s “Woven Water” collection is no exception.  As Wellingtonians we are hankering for the social months and can’t resist buying up dishy fabrics that have colour and work in a relaxed fit whilst looking stylish. This aspirational fabric purchasing is done in the depths of winter. Here we are; it’s spring and we are all ready for a good time!

Shirts are easing up and becoming less fitted.  Tailored smart short sleeves are our classic form this season and these can be teamed with tidy- cool cotton and stretch linen pants (posh with a great bum) and “Statement Shorts”. Call in, we’ve got options!

We have a Winner!
